How to become a cricket umpire in Tasmania (2026/27 guide)

Starting out as an umpire in Tasmania currently costs nothing if you are volunteering. Cricket Tasmania covers the $40 cost of the entry-level accreditation with a discount code, and the state's Working with Vulnerable People registration is free for volunteers under a fee relief program running for two years from January 2026. As Cricket Tasmania puts it, anyone can learn to be an umpire, all you need is a love of cricket.

This guide covers the registration, the courses, what they cost, who to contact, and where the pathway leads.

Step 1: Registration to Work with Vulnerable People

Tasmania does not have a Working with Children Check. It has a Registration to Work with Vulnerable People, known as RWVP, run by the Department of Justice. Cricket Tasmania states plainly that holding one is mandatory to umpire in Premier Cricket, so sort this out first.

Pick the right class.

Volunteer. For people who are not paid and receive no material benefit or reward. Normally there is a fee, but the Tasmanian Government is running fee relief for volunteers from 1 January 2026 for two years, so a new or renewing Volunteer registration currently costs nothing.
Employment/Volunteer. For anyone who is paid. The fee is $137.20 from 1 July 2026. It is an offence for a paid worker to take part in a regulated activity holding only a Volunteer registration, so if you will be paid a match fee, apply in this class from the start.

If your situation changes later, you can upgrade from Volunteer to Employment/Volunteer online through MyRWVP. That change costs $113.68, which is most of the full fee again, so it is worth choosing correctly the first time. All RWVP fees are non-refundable.

How to apply. Complete the application online, then visit a Service Tasmania shop to prove your identity and have your photo taken. Registration lasts five years. Apply for a RWVP through Service Tasmania.

Step 2: Community Officiating Accreditation

This is the entry-level qualification, and it lets you umpire competitive junior and senior community matches as well as Premier Cricket. Cricket Tasmania describes it as suiting people umpiring regularly for the first time and anyone who wants to know the game better.

It has two parts:

Online component. About an hour of self-paced learning on Cricket Australia's learning platform, which needs a CricketPlus account. Start it from PlayCricket Learn for umpires.
Practical component. On-field technique and applying what you learned online, also known as the Laws workshops. Cricket Tasmania offers these as a hybrid, with the practical part held at Ninja Stadium.

Finish both and the accreditation is granted. The course normally costs $40, and Cricket Tasmania supplies a discount code that covers it, so it is free to you. Register your interest through the Cricket Tasmania umpiring page.

Step 3: Get to a session and make contact

Cricket Tasmania runs introductory umpiring sessions, online and in person, for anyone who registers interest. In 2026 those ran on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, online through July and in person through August.

Those dates have passed for this season. If you are starting now, register your interest anyway and ask what is available mid-season, then keep an eye out for next winter's sessions. Whichever competition you end up in, ask early:

How are appointments made, and how do you submit availability?
What uniform and equipment are expected or provided?
Is there a match payment, and how does it work?
Which playing conditions apply to each grade you might umpire?
Who will mentor you through your first few matches?

That first question about payment matters more here than it looks. It determines which class of RWVP you need.

Step 4: Learn the Laws and your competition's playing conditions

Two sets of rules govern every match: the MCC Laws of Cricket, and the playing conditions of your competition, which can change the Laws for things like overs, fielding restrictions and hours of play. Match day: what to bring

Check the uniform requirements with your competition first. Otherwise, pack:

A ball counter and a spare
A pen and notebook or card for times, overs, penalty runs and incidents
A watch or phone for hours of play and intervals
Spare bails
Your competition's playing conditions, printed or on your phone
Sunscreen, a hat and a warm layer, because Tasmanian cricket weather can turn

Your first season: habits that help

Arrive early enough to inspect the ground, find the scorers and settle before the toss.
Confirm the details with both captains before play: start time, overs, intervals and any competition-specific rules.
If you have a colleague, agree who watches what and how you will signal to each other.
Reconcile your over count with the scorers at every interval.
Write down anything you were unsure about and look it up that night.
Ask to be paired with an experienced umpire for your first few matches.

Where the pathway can lead

The next step up is the Representative Officiating accreditation, for umpires wanting to stand in the higher grades of Premier Cricket and beyond. Cricket Tasmania suggests one to two years of experience in junior cricket, the lower grades of Premier Cricket or community cricket first.

It involves two to three hours of online learning plus attendance at Laws workshops held in August and any other assessment during the year. The full cost is $100, and Cricket Tasmania supplies a discount code for half of it, so you pay $50. Register your interest by emailing matchofficials@crickettas.com.au.

Above that, Cricket Tasmania has a State Umpire Panel, and Cricket Australia's pathway continues to national and international level. Tasmania has produced umpires who have gone all the way to Test cricket.

Whatever level you reach, accreditation has to be renewed every four years through an online course for the level you hold, with your certificate sent to Cricket Tasmania for approval.
